Airport courtesy lane for INC members gets huge backlash from netizens, OFW

INC airport courtesy lane

Known for its political influence in the Philippines, the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) or Church of Christ has the tendency to carry out controversial events or activities. This time, it seems the sect, which central headquarter can be found in Diliman, Quezon City, has again crossed a line that many are unwilling to accept.

Yesterday, January 6, 2013, Philstar.com republished on their Facebook Page a 2012 news story about “a courtesy lane for faster immigration clearance at the airport” in favor of INC members flying in from abroad in relation to their church’s centennial anniversary six months from now.

The rehash named Quezon City 2nd District Rep. Winnie Castelo and Quezon City 3rd District Rep. Jorge Banal as the advocates who filed House Resolution 2183, “for practical and courteous purposes of ushering” INC members who are expected to fly in from all over the world for the church’s centennial celebration. They demanded the Bureau of Immigration and the Bureau of Customs a designated lane labeled as INC Centennial Lane, which will only allow incoming INC members to have continuous and smooth entrance.

Castelo told Philstar, “It will be in the best interest of the government to assign a lane which will be labeled as INC Centennial Lane at the customs, which will allow the incoming Iglesia ni Cristo members’ continuous and smooth ingress.”

Meanwhile, Banal suggested that INC members should present identification proof to afford the smooth entry, “It is deemed practicable to request the Church Administration to instruct the incoming members to present proof of their church membership for an orderly and efficient entry.”

Netizens, especially overseas Filipino workers (OFW), expressed huge disapproval to the said House Resolution accusing it of “politicking,” “discrimination,” “unfair treatment” and many others. Below are few of the many comments from netizens as can be seen on Philstar.com Facebook Page:

    • I wonder why after all the defending you do for INC, you introduce yourself as a Catholic. Inconsistent? Think, think, think, Mr. Siguro.
