Jonalyn Viray reacts upon knowing ‘Ikaw’ is MCGI’s thanksgiving theme song
“Wow! Nice! Nakaka-overwhelm!” Ms. Jonalyn Viray expressed in an interview upon knowing that the praise song, “Ikaw” (You), was one of the MCGI or Members Church of God International’s chosen theme songs in their international thanksgiving, December 21 to 23, 2013. “Hindi ko po ine-expect na isa sa mga song na ininterpret ko ay magiging international theme song.” (Wow! Nice! Overwhelming! I didn’t expect that one of the songs I interpreted becomes an international theme song.)
Composed by Boy Christopher Ramos Jr., the song “Ikaw” was interpreted by Ms. Viray and won the Song of the Year Award in the A Song of Praise (ASOP) Music Festival Grand Finals Night held at Smart-Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, last September 9, 2013.
“Nakakatouch po. Alam kasi nila ang song na kinanta ko. As a singer, napakaimportante sa amin na nakaka-relate ang mga tao sa kinakanta namin.” (It’s so flattering that they know the song I sing. As a singer, it’s very important for us that people can relate to what we sing.)
During her visit at the ADD Convention Center in Pampanga, north of Manila, the Philippines Soul Princess performed the praise song before the MCGI congregants while singing with her on the first day of MCGI’s three-day international thanksgiving, December 21, 2013.
“Sobrang masaya ako sa performance ko. Very participative sila. Nagre-response sila sa kanta,” she said. (I’m so happy with my performance. They were very participative. They also response to my song.)
MCGI, a religious organization whose main base is in the Philippines, observes international thanksgiving every quarter of the year aside from its regular or weekly thanksgiving. With the help of modern satellite facilities, church members gather from different remote locations from the six continents of the globe namely North and South America, Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia.
When asked about her favorite line in the song, Ms. Viray said, “Actually, mahirap pumili ng favorite doon kasi lahat ng linya doon sa kanta, parang makaka-relate ka. Lahat yun napagdaanan mo. ‘Ikaw ang bumuhat ng pasan kong kay bigat. Ikaw nag liwanag pagkatapos ng ulan.’ Lahat ng linya doon, walang maitatapon. Lahat yun gusto ko.” (Actually, it’s hard to choose a favorite line in the song. You can relate to the song [if] you underwent the things mentioned there. ‘You’re the one who carried my burden. You’re the light after the rain.‘ All the lines there are indispensable. I like them all.)
Ms. Viray also shared her past experience about joining the ASOP Music Festival 2013 as an interpreter.
“Yung nakaraang competition na yun was very special kasi hindi ka lamang kakanta ng usual na pagkanta kasi yung kakantahin mong song ay dine-dedicate mo talaga sa Panginoon. Ang sarap ng pakiramdam kapag may chance kang makagawa ng mga ganoong bagay,” she said. (The recent competition was very special for me because it is not the usual kind of singing but it is a singing dedicated to the Lord. It’s a very fulfilling feeling getting the chance to do that kind of thing.)
ASOP Music Festival is the only Gospel songwriting competition on Philippine television which was started through the combined effort of Bro. Eliseo Soriano, MCGI Presiding Minister, and Kuya Daniel Razon, vice presiding minister. ASOP encourages all amateur and professional songwriters to create innovative styles in composing music all for the glory of God.
